Web.com Website Builder – 2021 Review https://realworldgolive.com/web-com-website-builder-2021-review/ https://realworldgolive.com/web-com-website-builder-2021-review/#respond Mon, 18 Oct 2021 20:01:42 +0000 https://realworldgolive.com/web-com-website-builder-2021-review/ Web.com is a great URL, but as a traditional web hosting company it hasn’t always lived up to its big name. Web.com is a great URL, but as a traditional web hosting company it hasn’t always lived up to its big name. However, with more emphasis on its intuitive website building features, Web.com becomes a much more attractive option if you are looking to build a site or an online store quickly. The web hosting part remains a mixed bag, but the service is offset by good shared hosting plans, solid phone support, plenty of themes, and great uptime. Gator and Wix remain our top picks for paid and free website builders, respectively, but Web.com has made great strides since our last review.

Prices, packages and options

Many website builders offer free options, but many others don’t. Of our Editors’ Choice selections, only Wix offers a free option. Web.com also doesn’t have a free option, so you have to pay for the service no matter what tier you choose. Fortunately, the prices are reasonable. Your first month’s fees are heavily reduced, going up to $ 1.95 per month, and even the normal rates are in line with what we’ve seen elsewhere.

The $ 10 per month starter plan gets you the website builder, plus over 150 templates and thousands of stock images. For $ 15 per month, the marketing plan submits your site to business directories and search engines, such as Bing, Google, and Yahoo. To unlock all online storefront options, you need to subscribe to the $ 20 per month eCommerce plan. Each site creation plan gives you five email addresses for your domain name with 2 GB of storage each. To learn more, consider the Web.com shared hosting plans detailed later in this review.

These are the standard plans, but Web.com offers other additional features as well. Starting at $ 7.99 per month, WordPress website building plans allow you to combine Web.com tools with the popular content management system. Go for a more expensive plan to gain more storage, more mailboxes, and more WordPress sites to manage. Hire web design and SEO experts to build your site for you.

To protect your site, Web.com offers spam protection through CatchGuard, as well as email virus protection and removal. You can get a Secure Socket Layer (SSL) certificate starting at $ 24 per year, which should be considered an essential purchase if you plan to sell any products. Note, however, that Gator (HostGator’s website builder) does offer a free SSL certificate with some of its plans. For $ 50 per year, the Cyber Security Solution package includes more perks, such as 24/7 support, device and identity monitoring, and a mobile VPN client.

Site tools and e-commerce options

Web.com makes it easy for anyone to start building a website. During the setup process, you can enter basic information, such as whether your site is personal or for a specialist business, and let Web.com build the site from there. Or you can choose from dozens of stylish designs as a starting point. Templates include sites for car dealers, coffee shops, jewelry makers, and repair services. Browsing the library also shows available stock art. Once you pick your theme, you’re stuck with it, which is a common restriction with website builders. However, starting over with a new site is also quick and easy, as is fixing minor errors.

Web.com Templates

In your dashboard, you can access and edit all of the sites you have created, as well as any uploaded files associated with those sites. The analytics section displays useful statistics, such as pageviews, unique visitors, popular pages, and the devices visitors use to access your site. Web.com integrates with Google Analytics to provide in-depth audience insights.

The site creation interface itself is pleasantly simple. You can create a single page site or opt for multiple pages and nest them on top of each other to create menus that users can navigate. Switch between device layouts at any time to see how your site looks on a laptop versus a phone. The home page of our bakery test website takes users to an About Us section, a Contact page and, of course, the Store page. In the advanced settings, you enable more specialized types of pages, such as your legal page, various error pages, and a blog. Here you can also integrate your social media accounts for Instagram, Pinterest and Disqus comments.

Ecommerce tools have their own section within the interface. There you can enter up to 500 products, including a mix of physical and digital goods. A customer service rep said that you can theoretically sell subscriptions, but there’s no way, for example, to lock down part of your site to paying members the way Wix allows you to. You can, however, offer discounts. You can also perform organizational tasks like tracking orders, entering tax information, and making sure shipping between customers and warehouses stays on track. The e-commerce level includes the integration of the Facebook marketplace.

Web.com store

Once all of your content is in place, showcase it with Web.com’s editing tools. Change individual style elements like fonts and buttons, or change the entire theme to literally give your site a new lick of paint. Click the big Build button to display a list of site features to drag and drop directly onto the page, from icons and image galleries to share buttons and text forms. Embed a YouTube video that plays in a loop because the background of your site looks particularly vibrant. You can even write and embed your own code.

If you don’t want to tinker with the features directly, you can also insert blocks, pre-made generic elements that you can customize without creating from scratch. With Blocks, you can instantly add a team page, call to action, or testimonials to your site. If you browse all that Web.com has to offer, even novice users can create an engaging site in no time.

While Web.com has plenty of stock photos, there’s not much you can do with those photos or the photos that you upload yourself. Basically all you can do is resize the images and add a translucent colored overlay. Gator has limited photo editing features as well, but Duda and Wix have more options. Web.com lets you design your own logo with a built-in tool, but this one-time purchase costs $ 21.76.

Web.com blocks

Shared hosting

When you purchase a website.com builder plan, you also get free domain and hosting. However, Web.com still sells three levels of shared hosting based on Linux or Windows: essential hosting, business hosting, and premium hosting. Each includes a website builder, unlimited monthly data transfers, access to open source applications, site backup, and one-year domain registration. However, the feature sets of the plans differ in other areas.

For example, Essential Hosting (starting at $ 5.95 per month or $ 119.52 per year) includes 300 GB of storage, 25 FTP accounts, and 100 email addresses. Professional (starting at $ 7.95 per month or $ 147.48 per year) increases specs to 500GB of storage, 50 FTP accounts, and 500 email accounts. Premium hosting (starting at $ 9.95 per month or $ 349.56 per year) sits at the top of the hill with unlimited storage, unlimited FTP accounts, and 1,000 email addresses.

These are decent shared hosting plans, but they can’t touch HostGator’s great deals. This Editors’ Choice choice for shared hosting offers diverse and powerful packages that include Linux or Windows servers, along with unlimited storage, monthly data transfers, and email addresses on all plans.

Unfortunately, Web.com is not the host to turn to if you want to sign up for something other than shared hosting. The service lacks cloud, dedicated, and VPS hosting plans. In fact, a customer service representative from Web.com suggested that people should take a look at Network Solutions, the company’s sister site, for these types of hosting plans. Check out the various related roundups to see our other recommendations in each category.

Web.com Hosting

Excellent availability and customer support

The availability of a website is one of the most important aspects of a hosting service. While your site is down, customers won’t be able to find you or access your products or services, and they might not come back.

To test this, we used a website monitoring tool to track the availability of our test site hosted on Web.com. Every 15 minutes, the tool pings our website and sends us an email if it fails to contact the site for more than a minute. We looked at data from the last 14 days for each site review. In our last test, Web.com hasn’t gone down once, a noticeable improvement from our last look a few years ago.

Web.com’s customer service is equally reliable. We called 24/7 customer service on a weekday evening to get an explanation regarding Web.com’s shared web hosting plan. Within seconds, someone transferred us to the relevant department. Shortly after, we chatted with a very helpful rep who gave us a detailed explanation of Web.com’s shared hosting plans. This same person said that we should visit Network Solutions for the higher level plans.

We have also launched web chat to get details about the security features of Web.com. The helpful customer service representative explained several available features in an easy to understand manner. They also told us that customers can get a full refund within three days of purchase, which is strict compared to Duda’s 30-day window and Gator’s 45-day window.

Web.com goes 2.0

As a traditional web hosting service, Web.com left a lot to be desired. But as a website builder with hosting plans, Web.com is an attractive offer. Some editing options could be more powerful, but we easily recommend Web.com to anyone looking for intuitive, accessible tools for quickly building a website. If you want an even more robust toolkit, consider Gator (the editors ‘choice for paid website builders) and Wix (the editors’ choice for free website builders).

A reporter from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch this week alerted Missouri education officials that a state website that lists teachers’ names and certification status had a flaw: the page returned the numbers. teachers’ social security readily available.

The Post-Dispatch also notified the teachers’ union and waited two days for the state to resolve the issue before publishing an article on Thursday revealing the safety issue.

To many, it sounded like the kind of surveillance reporting that many news agencies see as the hallmark of responsible journalism. But Governor Mike Parson of Missouri had a different point of view.

At a press conference Thursday, he said he asked prosecutors and the State Highway Patrol to investigate the journalist, whom he accused of “hacking” private information of teachers.

“This individual is not a victim,” Parson said at the press conference, without identifying the reporter or The Post-Dispatch. “They were acting against a state agency to compromise teachers’ personal information in an attempt to embarrass the state and sell titles for their media.”

He added, “We will not let this crime against teachers in Missouri go unpunished.”

The announcement infuriated journalists, other news outlets and media rights groups, who said the journalist was threatened with a criminal investigation for doing his job.

“The newspaper and the reporter did nothing wrong,” said Mark Maassen, executive director of the Missouri Press Association. “It is not uncommon for elected officials to blame the media for cases like this. But, in this case, The Post-Dispatch and their reporter should be applauded for uncovering a serious loophole and alerting the state agency. “

Missouri State Highway Patrol spokesman Captain John Hotz said the agency was “investigating potential unauthorized access to Department of Elementary and Secondary Education data.” He declined to comment further.

Locke Thompson, the Cole County district attorney, said his office will review the State Highway Patrol’s findings.

“Once the investigation is complete, I will review the evidence and determine if criminal charges are appropriate,” he said.

In a statement, Ian Caso, president and editor of The Post-Dispatch, said he was “grateful” for the work of Josh Renaud, a designer and news developer who revealed the story of problems with the website. , which is administered by the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education.

“I think he should be commended for his work and his sense of duty,” said Caso. “We are surprised and disappointed with the Governor’s response and deviation.”

Joe Martineau, an attorney for the newspaper, said it was “unfounded” for education officials to hijack failures in their computer system by describing Renaud’s report as a hack.

“A hacker is someone who subverts computer security with malicious or criminal intent,” he said. “There has been no firewall or security breach here, and certainly no malicious intent.”

The Post-Dispatch said the social security numbers of teachers, administrators and counselors were “present” in the HTML source code of the publicly accessible pages of the website. The source code for a web page can usually be found by right-clicking on it and scrolling to “view page source”.

Mr Parson, a Republican, said it was “illegal to access data and encrypted systems in order to examine the personal information of other people.”

He cited a state law that said a hacker was anyone who had gained unauthorized access to information or content. He said the reporter had no permission to “convert or decode” the information on the website.

“It was clearly a hack,” Parson said, adding that the state would investigate any loopholes found in the system.

Legal observers said they were puzzled by Mr Parson’s interpretation of what constituted hacking.

Frank Bowman, a professor of law at the University of Missouri School of Law, said it was hard to imagine the prosecution of a reporter who alerted state officials to information he had findings by examining a publicly available website.

The odds of prosecutors going after Mr. Renaud, the reporter, “are between zero and zero,” Professor Bowman said. “They’re not going to embarrass themselves like that.”

Tony Lovasco, a Republican state representative with professional computer training, said the governor’s announcement showed “a fundamental misunderstanding of both web technology and industry standard procedures for reporting vulnerabilities in security”.

“Journalists who responsibly sound the alarm on data privacy are not criminal hacking” he said on Twitter.

Teachers across the state were shocked to learn of the loopholes in the system, said Byron Clemens, spokesperson for the American Federation of Teachers local, St. Louis Local 420, adding that it was theirs. advised to obtain a copy of their credit reports to ensure that their information has not been compromised.

“It’s a shame the governor is trying to politicize what used to be a public service,” Clemens said, referring to The Post-Dispatch story.

Sandra Davidson, a professor at the Missouri School of Journalism, said while she was pissed off by the governor’s aggressive response, she said it could lead to more cutthroat reporting.

“Would it infuriate reporters, editors and publishers so much for the governor to make that kind of threat that it actually emboldens reporters?” Asked Professor Davidson.

The Post-Dispatch continued to follow the story on Friday.

He has published another article on the subject – this one examining the “massive computer failures” plaguing the state of Missouri.

Missouri to sue reporter who exposed DESE data vulnerability https://realworldgolive.com/missouri-to-sue-reporter-who-exposed-dese-data-vulnerability/ https://realworldgolive.com/missouri-to-sue-reporter-who-exposed-dese-data-vulnerability/#respond Fri, 15 Oct 2021 04:15:45 +0000 https://realworldgolive.com/missouri-to-sue-reporter-who-exposed-dese-data-vulnerability/ The state of Missouri is investigating the discovery by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of vulnerable data on a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education web application for the purpose of prosecution, the governor said Thursday. The state of Missouri is investigating the discovery by the St. Louis Post-Dispatch of vulnerable data on a Department of Elementary and Secondary Education web application for the purpose of prosecution, the governor said Thursday.

On Tuesday, personally identifiable information, including Social Security numbers, of three Missouri teachers was accessed through a 2011 DESE web application tool that local education agencies can use to verify certificates held by educators.

Local education agencies may use the last four digits of an educator’s social security number as unique information when looking to verify certifications.

“We also don’t know why this person is seeking to access, convert and take personal information about teachers in Missouri,” Parson said at a press conference Thursday. “But let me be clear, this administration stands up against all perpetrators who will attempt to steal personal information and harm Missourians.”

In an article published Wednesday evening, the St. Louis Post-Dispatch identifies itself as the media outlet that discovered the vulnerability and reported the problem to DESE, which prompted the web application to be disabled.

Although private information was not clearly visible or searchable on DESE web pages, according to the article, teachers’ social security numbers were accessible in the HTML source code of the pages.

HTML source code is usually accessed through a web browser and serves as the primary basis for a web page.

The Post-Dispatch discovered the vulnerability and worked with three educators to confirm that the nine-digit numbers were Social Security numbers, the article said. The newspaper then told DESE that it had confirmed the vulnerability with educators and a cybersecurity expert.

The Post-Dispatch has delayed the release of its reports to give the department time to fix the faulty web application and assess potential vulnerabilities in other state government websites.

According to their reports, more than 100,000 Social Security numbers of teachers, administrators and counselors at Missouri schools were vulnerable to public exposure.

“The journalist acted responsibly in reporting his findings to DESE so that the state can act to prevent disclosure and abuse,” Post-Dispatch lawyer Joseph Martineau said in a statement on Wednesday. newspaper. “A hacker is someone who subverts computer security with malicious or criminal intent. Here there has been no firewall or security breach and certainly no malicious intent. “

In a rushed press conference Thursday morning that left no time to ask questions, Parson said the recordings were made as part of a multi-step process involving viewing the HTML source code of the website.

He said the person who accessed the educators’ information was unauthorized and took steps to convert or decode the information, calling the reporter a “hacker”.

“This data was not available for free and had to be converted and decoded to be revealed,” Parson said.

The St. Louis Post-Dispatch disputes the characterization.

“That DESE hijacks its failures by qualifying it as ‘piracy’ is unfounded,” Martineau said. “Fortunately, these failures have been discovered. “

Parson said the state is working to identify teachers whose information has been compromised and any others who may also be compromised.

“This individual is not a victim. They were acting against a state agency to compromise teachers’ personal information for the purpose of embarrassing the state and selling titles for their media, ”Parson said. “We will not let this crime against teachers in Missouri go unpunished, and we refuse to let them be a pawn in the media’s political vendetta.”

Parson said his administration informed Cole County District Attorney Locke Thompson of the incident and was working with the Missouri State Highway Patrol’s Drug and Crime Control Division to investigate everyone involved.

Parson said the investigation could cost up to $ 50 million.

The results of the investigation will go to Thompson.

“Once the investigation is complete, I will review the evidence and determine if criminal charges are appropriate,” said Thompson.

Missouri Supreme Court rules prohibit Thompson from further commenting on ongoing investigations.

During the press conference on Thursday, Parson cited state law 569.095, which states that a person falsifies computer data if they knowingly and without authorization access, take and examine personal information about another person. .

He said the state is coordinating its resources to respond and will use all available legal methods to hold the journalist and newspaper accountable.

Tampering with computer data is a Class A felony, but can be considered a Class E felony if the offense involves devising or carrying out a scheme to defraud or obtain property valued at $ 750 or more.

Parson said the state would also consider civil action to recover damages against those involved.

House Minority Leader Crystal Quade D-Springfield said Thursday the governor should be grateful the Post-Dispatch detected the flaw and reported it to DESE.

“In the true tradition of public service journalism, the Post-Dispatch discovered a problem – a publicly discernible problem for anyone who bother to watch; he verified the problem with experts; and it brought the issue to the attention of state officials for corrective action, ”Quade said in a press release. “The governor should direct his anger at the state government’s failure to keep its technology secure and up to date and work to resolve the problem, not threaten journalists with lawsuits for discovering these failures.”

Parson said the state is also working to strengthen security and address vulnerable areas.

HOUSTON (AP) – The Texas child welfare agency is accused of removing a webpage with information about a suicide prevention hotline and other resources for LGBTQ youth, following criticism from one of Governor Greg Abbott’s main challengers.

The Houston Chronicle reported Tuesday that Abbott’s challenger Don Huffines posted a video on Twitter in August accusing the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services of “promoting transgender sex policies to Texas youth.” A few hours after the video was posted, the web page was deleted.

The page appears in a section of the agency’s website titled “Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation”.

The entire website for Texas Youth Connection, a division of family and protective services that directs young people in foster care to various resources, including education, housing and those on its LGBTQ page, has also disappeared.

“These are not the values of Texas, these are not the values of the Republican Party, but obviously these are the values of Greg Abbott,” Huffines said in his video.

Abbott, who appoints the department’s commissioner and the nine-member board, did not respond to the newspaper’s request for comment. An Abbott spokeswoman did not immediately return an Associated Press email requesting comment on Tuesday.

Patrick Crimmins, the spokesperson for the department, declined to answer the newspaper’s detailed questions.

But agency communications obtained by the Houston Chronicle via a public record request showed employees were discussing the removal of the “Gender Identity and Sexual Orientation” page in response to Huffines’ tweet.

After being contacted by media relations director Marissa Gonzales that the Huffins video was “starting to explode on Twitter,” Crimmins reached out to Darrell Azar, the agency’s director of web and creative services, who oversees the page.

“Darrell – please note that we may need to remove this page or revise the content in some way,” Crimmins wrote.

Ricardo Martinez, chief executive of LGBTQ rights group Equality Texas, said LGBTQ children are disproportionately represented in foster families and “face truly staggering discrimination and abuse.”

“The state is responsible for the lives of these children, but it has intentionally taken away a way for them to find help when they need it most,” Martinez said. “This action is unreasonable, and it reminds us that political aspirations are part of every attack on LGBTQ + children in Texas.”

Huffins, one of the three main GOP challengers facing Abbott next year, criticized the governor’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the influx of migrants to the state’s southern border.

Huffines, a former state senator, said his campaign prompted Abbott to take more conservative positions on certain issues.

In August, Abbott asked Department of Family and Protective Services Commissioner Jaime Masters to determine whether sex reassignment surgery for transgender minors was a form of child abuse. He also called on the agency to investigate parents whose children are undergoing the procedure if it finds that such surgeries constitute abuse.

The masters responded by agreeing with Abbott, calling the surgeries “child abuse.” LGBTQ advocates say surgery is rarely performed on children.

In this article, you will learn how to make your website text dynamic and more engaging using pure CSS typewriter effects.

The typewriter effect means that the text is revealed gradually, as if it were typed before your eyes.

Adding typewriter effects to pieces of your text can help engage your website visitors and keep them interested in reading more. Typewriter effect can be used for many purposes, such as creating engaging landing pages, call-to-action elements, personal websites, and code demos.

The typewriter effect is easy to create

The typewriter effect is easy to create, and all you will need to understand this tutorial is a basic knowledge of CSS and CSS animations.

Here’s how the typewriter effect will work:

  • The typewriter animation will reveal our text element by changing its width from 0 to 100% step by step using CSS steps() function.
  • A flashing animation will animate the cursor which “types” the text.

Creation of the web page for our typing effect

Let’s start by creating the web page for our typewriter demo. It will include a <div> container for our typewriter text with a class of typed-out:

<!doctype html>
<html>
  <head>
    <title>Typewriter effect</title>
    <style>
      body{
        background: navajowhite;
        background-size: cover;
        font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;
      }
  </style>
  </head>
  <body>
    <div class="container">
      <div class="typed-out">Web Developer</div>
    </div>
  </body>
</html>

Stylize the container for typewriter text

Now that we have the layout of the webpage, let’s style it <div> with the class “typed”:

.typed-out {
  overflow: hidden;
  border-right: .15em solid orange;
  font-size: 1.6rem;
  width: 0;
}

Note that in order for the typewriter effect to work, we’ve added the following:

  • "overflow: hidden;" and one "width: 0;", to make sure that the content of the text is not revealed until the typing effect begins.
  • "border-right: .15em solid orange;", to create the typewriter cursor.

Before doing the typing effect, in order to stop the cursor at the last letter of the typed-out element once it’s been fully typed, like a typewriter (or really a word processor), we’ll create a container for it. typed-out element and add display: inline-block;:

.container {
  display: inline-block;
}

Animating the revelation text

The animation of the typewriter will create the effect of the text inside the typed-out item being entered, letter by letter. We will use the @keyframes CSS animation rule:

@keyframes typing {
  from { width: 0 }
  to { width: 100% }
}

As you can see, this animation only changes the width of an element from 0 to 100%.

Now we are going to include this animation in our typed-out class and set its animation direction to forwards to ensure that the text element will not revert to width: 0 once the animation is finished:

.typed-out{
    overflow: hidden;
    border-right: .15em solid orange;
    white-space: nowrap;
    font-size: 1.6rem;
    width: 0;
    animation: typing 1s forwards;
}

Our text element will simply be revealed in one smooth step, from left to right:

Not smoothly by SitePoint (@SitePoint)
on CodePen.

Adding steps to achieve a typewriter effect

So far our text is revealed, but in a fluid way that doesn’t reveal the text letter by letter. It’s a start, but it’s obviously not what a typewriter effect looks like.

To make this animation reveal our text element letter by letter, or in stages, like a typewriter would, we have to divide the typing animation included by the typed-out class in steps so that it looks like it is typed. This is where the steps() CSS function is available:

.typed-out{
  overflow: hidden;
  border-right: .15em solid orange;
  white-space: nowrap;
  font-size: 1.6rem;
  width: 0;
  animation:
    typing 1s steps(20, end) forwards;
}

As you can see, we have divided the typing 20-step animation using CSS steps() function. Here is what we see now:

Multiple steps per SitePoint (@SitePoint)
on CodePen.

Here is our full code so far:

<html>
  <head>
    <title>Typewriter effect</title>
  </head>
  <style>
    body{
      background: navajowhite;
      background-size: cover;
      font-family: 'Trebuchet MS', sans-serif;
    }
    .container{
      display: inline-block;
    }
    .typed-out{
      overflow: hidden;
      border-right: .15em solid orange;
      white-space: nowrap;
      animation:
      typing 1s steps(20, end) forwards;
      font-size: 1.6rem;
      width: 0;
    }
    @keyframes typing {
      from { width: 0 }
      to { width: 100% }
    }
  </style>
<body>
<h1>I'm Matt, I'm a</h1>
<div class="container">
  <div class="typed-out">Web Developer</div>
</div>
</body>
</html>

Adjusted Steps for Longer Typing Effect

To adjust for longer pieces of text, you will need to increase the steps and duration of the typing animation:

See the pen
Long Typewriter Effect by SitePoint (@SitePoint)
on CodePen.

Adjusted Steps for Shorter Strike Effect

And to adjust for shorter pieces of text, you’ll need to reduce the steps and duration of the typing animation:

Short Typewriter Effect by SitePoint (@SitePoint)
on CodePen.

Creating and styling the flashing cursor animation

Obviously, the original mechanical typewriters did not have a blinking cursor, but it has become a tradition to add one to mimic the more modern computer / word processor blinking cursor effect. Flashing cursor animation helps make typed text stand out even more from static text elements.

To add a blinking cursor animation to our typewriter animation, we will first create the blink animation:

@keyframes blink {
  from { border-color: transparent }
  to { border-color: orange; }
}

Inside our web page, this animation will change the border color of the typed-out the border of the element – which is used as the slider for the typewriter effect – from transparent to orange.

We will include this animation in the typed-out rules of the class and set its animation direction property to infinite to make the cursor disappear and reappear every .8s forever:

.typed-out{
    overflow: hidden;
    border-right: .15em solid orange;
    white-space: nowrap;
    font-size: 1.6rem;
    width: 0;
    animation:
      typing 1s steps(20, end) forwards,
      blink .8s infinite;
}

See the pen
Flashing cursor by SitePoint (@SitePoint)
on CodePen.

Setting code for flashing keystroke effect

We can make the slider thinner or thicker by adjusting its border-right: .15em solid orange; property, or you can give the slider a different color, give it a border radius, adjust the frequency of its blink effect, and more.

See the pen

on CodePen.

You can experiment with these properties in the CodePen demo and see what else you can find!

Combine the elements of typewriter text animations

Now that you know how to create the typewriter effect in CSS, it’s time for me to introduce you to some practical and relevant use cases of this typing effect.

Wallet typing effect

Here is an example of a personal portfolio. Typewriter effects can make your personal website / website resume stand out and make it more attractive.

Lines of portfolio text revealed by typing effect

You can play with this portfolio demo on CodePen.

API keystroke effect

Here’s an example API landing page.

API code revealed in typewriter mode

You can play with this API demo on CodePen.

Chances are, at some point in your development journey, you’ve come across a landing page from an API provider and seen a block of code like this, demonstrating their API implementation. Personally, I find this to be a really practical and relevant implementation of the typewriter effect, and I find it to look more appealing and inviting than a piece of static code.

Typing effect of the product landing page

Here is an example of a SaaS / product landing page.

Lines of text revealed in typewriter mode on a SaaS / product landing page

You can play this SaaS product page demo on CodePen.

I have found that typewriter effects in SaaS or product landing pages are more appealing and engaging to visitors looking to use their products or services. Having spent a lot of time developing web services and web applications, I can say from experience that keystrokes create additional interest in your landing pages. Typed text like “Get started today” gives a call-to-action text more oomph.

Conclusion

We have seen in this article how easy it is to use CSS to create animated “typewriter” text. This typing effect can definitely add interest and fun to your web pages.

It might be worth closing with a quick word of warning, however. This technique is best used on small portions of non-critical text, just to create a little extra fun. But be careful not to trust it too much, as using CSS animation like this has some limitations. Be sure to test your typewriter text on a range of devices and window sizes, as results may vary from platform to platform. Also, think about end users who rely on assistive technology and ideally run usability testing to make sure you don’t complicate your users’ lives. Because you can doing something with pure CSS doesn’t necessarily mean you should do it. If the typewriter effect is important to you and you want to use it for more critical content, maybe at least consider JavaScript solutions yourself.

Anyway, I hope you enjoyed this article and it made you think of other cool things you can do with CSS animation to add touches of interest and fun to your web pages.

In a very rare case, the Kollam Extra Sessions Court on Monday found Sooraj S Kumar (28) guilty of murdering his wife Uthra by having her bitten by a cobra. The accused was present in court when Judge M Manoj read the guilty verdict. The quantum of the sentence will be announced on October 13.

The prosecution asked the court to impose the death penalty on the accused, as the crime was “evil and horrific” in nature.

The case dates back to May 7, 2020 when Uthra (25), mother of one year old, was found dead from a snake bite at her home in Anchal in the Kollam district of Kerala. . The cobra that bit her and later found her in the same room reportedly inflicted the bite overnight as Uthra, her husband Sooraj and their one-year-old were sleeping.

Although it was initially dismissed as a snakebite by local police, the fact that Utthra was bitten earlier by a viper on March 2, 2020 at her in-laws which required hospitalization, and a complaint for foul play in his death by his parents forced senior police officials to launch a detailed investigation.

After a thorough investigation by Kollam Rural SP Harishanker, officers concluded that Sooraj, an employee of a private financial institution, had thoroughly plotted the murder of his wife Uthra by being bitten by a snake.

Police claimed Sooraj bought both the viper and the cobra from a snake master to kill his wife and make her look like a natural snakebite. Although the attempt to bite the viper in March 2020 failed because she was hospitalized on time, he managed to repeat the devious act with the cobra two months later. She was on treatment for more than 50 days in a hospital after the first snakebite.

According to the police version, the couple had a strained relationship and Uthra’s parents claimed that she was regularly harassed by the in-laws because of the dowry. The Kollam Crime Branch, which led the investigation, had filed a 1,000-page indictment in the case, detailing how Sooraj had committed the murder, using scientific and circumstantial evidence.

The information overload is real. You don’t always have time to read a 5,000 word article or juicy interview when it appears on your Twitter feed. And even when you have the time, you can be underground between metro stops, stuck in a dead zone, or not have Wi-Fi.

The most reliable way to catch up on your digital reading is to make sure it is saved and accessible for offline reading. There are many apps and browsers that can help you save it for later. Here’s how to download whatever you want and keep it readable, even without an internet connection.

Save a web page in Chrome

Office

For desktop Chrome users, the easiest built-in way to save a web page for offline reading is to download the page as a file. Open the three-dot menu at the top right and select More Tools> Save Page As. You can also right-click anywhere on the page and select Save as or use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl + S under Windows or Command + S in macOS.

Chrome can save the entire web page, including text and media, or just HTML text. Download the file you prefer on your computer and read the page anytime, even without an internet connection.

Android

download for later on android

Save a webpage to the Android app by opening the three-dot menu icon and tapping the download icon at the top. A banner at the bottom of the screen will let you know when the page has been made available for offline reading. Click on Open to display a static version of the page. Access downloads later by opening the three-dot menu and pressing Downloads.

Chrome on iOS and iPadOS

Chrome on iOS and iPadOS

To make an article available for offline reading in the Chrome app on iPhone or iPad, press the button To share (an up arrow) and select Add to playlist. Open the browser three-dot menu and select Reading list to view saved pages. Touch and hold a saved item until a menu appears, and then touch Open offline version and you are ready to read offline.

Save a web page in Microsoft Edge

Save a web page in Microsoft Edge

Microsoft’s Edge browser is powered by the same Chromium engine as Google Chrome’s, so the instructions here will be similar. Click on the three-point ellipsis menu at the top right and select More Tools> Save Page As to download a file to your PC.

On Android, the process is also similar to Chrome, but the three-dot menu is at the bottom center of the screen. Tap it, swipe up slightly, and select Download Page. The download will appear at the bottom of the screen; press Open to read. To read later, tap the three-dot menu and select Downloads. Web pages that you have saved can be read automatically offline.

download an article on edge for android

On Edge for iOS, the Reading List option appears when you tap the three-dot menu, although it is grayed out for us. Your best bet might be to hit the share icon and save to Pocket.

Save a web page in Safari

safari file download

Save a web page in Safari by opening File> Save As. You can then choose between file formats Web Archives (all textual and multimedia elements) or Page source (source text only). To choose File> Export to PDF if you need a PDF version of the article.

safari playlist

Safari also has a reading list feature that lets you save articles for offline reading. Desktop users can click the To share icon and choose Add to playlist. Another option is Bookmarks> Add to playlist. Once added, click on the Show sidebar in the Safari toolbar and make sure the glasses icon is selected. Right-click on an entry and select Save offline.

Make sure saved articles are available for offline reading by default under Safari> Preferences> Advanced. Check the box next to Automatically save articles for offline reading.

The process works the same on iOS and iPadOS. Press the To share shutter and choose Add to playlist. Press the Bookmark and choose the glasses icon to view your playlist. Long press the item and select Save offline in the context menu to save the article.

ios playlist

Set the saved articles to be made available offline by default under Settings> Safari. Scroll all the way down and turn on the switch next to Automatically save offline.

Save a web page in Firefox

firefox download

For offline reading with Firefox, open the hamburger menu and choose save page as to download the page as a file. You will have the choice of downloading the full page, HTML only, or a simple text file.

Recommended by our editors

Otherwise, the desktop browser relies heavily on integration with Pocket, the Firefox backup service that Mozilla acquired in 2017. Right click and select Save the page in Pocket to do just that, or click on the Pocket icon at the top right. Content saved in Pocket can be accessed through GetPocket.com or the Pocket mobile apps. Refresh Pocket to make sure what you saved appears in your account, and it will then be available for offline reading.

firefox ios playlist

The iOS version of Firefox has a reading list feature that allows offline reading. Open the three-dot menu in the search bar and select Add to playlist. Once an item has been saved, tap the hamburger menu and select Reading list. Select the article you want to open and it will automatically be made available to you offline.

On the Firefox iOS and Android apps, you can also select Save to Pocket.

Extensions and applications

save page extension

Although the Pocket Later Backup service is owned by Mozilla, it is not limited to Firefox. It is available as an official browser extension for Chrome and Safari for one-click backups, and on mobile.

Other options include the Save Page WE extension for Chrome and Firefox, which saves web pages to your computer with just one click; adjust the settings to determine the amount of information saved.

For more powerful solutions, turn to the HTTrack utility software (for Windows, Linux, and Android) or SiteSucker (for macOS and iOS). These programs can download entire website directories from one URL, allowing you to browse a site offline.
