The Cebu City government has prepared 176.45 million pesos for distribution to 88,227 eligible seniors to receive financial assistance of 2,000 pesos for the months of September and October this year.
The distribution will take place on Friday, October 28, 2022, the birthday of Cebu City Mayor Michael Rama.
Vicente Esmeña, head of the Office of Elder Affairs (Osca), said that the fund for this financial aid comes from the supplementary budget of 1.3 billion pesos that was approved by the city council during its regular session on Wednesday. October 26.
Dr Ester Concha, head of the Department of Social Welfare and Services (DSWS), said all city government staff had been tasked to help with the distribution on Friday.
The DSWS has been assigned to handle distribution in mountain barangays in the North and South Districts of Cebu City, while 27 other city government departments will handle distribution in other villages.
Elderly people were advised to go to their respective barangay and bring with them an ID card issued by Osca and a ball-point pen to be able to claim their cash assistance.
The City has said letters of permission will no longer be honored.
Cash aid for the elderly was part of SB 3, which was pushed by Councilor Noel Wenceslao, chairman of the Budget and Finance Committee.
SB 3’s final deliberation did not go smoothly on Wednesday, October 26, as opposition advisers questioned the alleged use of “short cut” methods to pass the budget order.
Councilor Nestor Archival raised the question why the proposed ordinance was already in third and final reading when he had not seen the ordinance discussed in first and second reading at the previous council session.
But Wenceslao refuted Archival’s statement, saying the first and second readings were already done last week.
The budget, however, passed the third and final reading without any objections. (PAC/LMJ)
