NEW YORK (WABC) – Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) Commissioner Hank Gutman on Tuesday announced plans to further transform city streets in 2021, raising the record for installation of protected cycle lanes from last year and almost doubling last year’s record for bus project totals.

Officials say the administration plans to install 28 miles of new bus lanes and improved bus lanes in 2021, as well as thirty miles of protected cycle lanes – both will be the most installed in one year in the history of New York City, breaking records set by that administration last year.

The mayor also announced the proposed locations for the new “cycle boulevards” in each arrondissement, as originally announced in the state of the city speech.

The announcements continue Streets Week !, a suite of transportation, road safety and open space policy announcements to double the transformative Vision Zero initiative.

Restarting better buses: “Red Carpet to Recovery”

As part of its red carpet for recovery in 2021, the DOT will build or improve 28 miles of Better Buses projects, serving 951,000 bus riders per day, to bring essential workers to jobs, minimize congestion and pollution from private automobiles and supporting the city’s economy. recovery.

New and improved projects will include:

– Bus pilots: By the end of 2021, DOT and MTA will complete five buses – four more than ever in a year. In addition to projects already completed on Main Street in Flushing and 181st Street in Manhattan, buses will be built this year along Jamaica and Archer avenues in Queens, and along Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. In total, these five bus lines will improve service for 657,000 bus users per day.

– New and improved bus lanes in Manhattan, Queens and Staten Island: New and improved bus lanes will serve bus riders across the city, with changes including new paint and red markings, signage improvements, pedestrian safety and clearer signage. These bus lanes will benefit 200,000 additional bus riders every day and will include projects on 1st and 2nd Avenues, Battery Place and A and D Avenues (Manhattan), Merrick Blvd (Queens) and Hylan Blvd (Staten Island). In total, the DOT will create 11.5 miles of new track and 16.3 miles of improved track this year.

– Bronx Buses Transformed: DOT continues its radical transformation of bus lanes across the Bronx. Building on work completed in 2020 along critical streets like 149th Street and EL Grant Highway, DOT will build more bus lanes, bus boarding islands, protected bike lanes and road improvements. pedestrian safety. Together, these Bronx projects will serve 175,000 bus riders per day. The projects include:
– University Avenue transformation: DOT will install dedicated bus lanes along University Avenue from Washington Bridge to Kingsbridge Road, including six new boarding islands for buses. New protected cycle paths will also be installed along University Avenue, from at least Washington Bridge to Tremont Avenue.
– Rethinking Fordham Road Select Bus Service: In 2010, Fordham Road was the site of New York City’s first select bus service line. Now, DOT will revitalize the streets through an inclusive outreach plan with businesses, community leaders and families. The redevelopment of the street will follow as the DOT listens to the needs of this community.

– New bus lanes along Story Avenue and Gun Hill Road, as well as changes to improve bus flow near Pelham Bay Park Tube Station, the terminus of train 6 which also serves as the closest stop to City Island. The changes made here will eliminate the current indirect routing of the bus to the station, saving the transfer of bus riders up to two minutes per trip.
– New pedestrian islands on Webster Avenue and 149th Street to ensure safe passage to and from bus stops.

– Signal priority: As per the Better Buses action plan, DOT will activate technology to prioritize buses in over 300 locations, ensuring buses wait at fewer red lights.

– MTA coordination: DOT will continue to work with MTA to include bus priority in its essential work to overhaul the district network as this process moves forward and encourages MTA to implement all-door boarding on all bus lines, now that OMNY contactless payment has been installed system-wide.

Last year, the mayor’s Better Buses Restart program created more than 16 miles of new bus lanes and lanes in the five boroughs – the most ever in a year. Completed projects include Jay Street and Malcolm X Blvd in Brooklyn, the extension of 14th Street and 181st Street in Manhattan, Hylan Boulevard on Staten Island, EL Grant Highway, University Ave and 149th Street in the Bronx and Merrick Blvd and Main Street in Queens.

Protected cycle paths

DOT plans to build a record 30 miles of protected cycle paths in 2021, including:

– East 61st and 62nd Street, Manhattan / Northern Blvd, Queens: connecting Midtown to Queensboro Bridge and 34th Ave Open Street in Jackson Heights

– 7th Avenue – Reliant Central Park to Midtown

– Bronxdale Avenue and White Plains Road: construction of protected lanes in the existing neighborhood network, reception of an electric scooter pilot from this summer.

– Meeker Avenue: East / West connection of the new Kosciusko Bridge in Williamsburg

Bicycle boulevards

As the mayor of Blasio underlined in his speech on the state of the city, the DOT will create a cycle boulevard in each arrondissement in 2021. Cycle boulevards slow down the speed of vehicles and limit volumes to create a bicycle infrastructure at low stress in an environment conducive to pedestrians.
