Virtual events spend 40 times less carbon emissions than on-site events, according to new 6Connex sustainability study
SAN ANTONIO, Texas, July 19, 2021 / PRNewswire / – An independent study comparing the carbon impact of on-site versus virtual events, commissioned by 6Connex and conducted by WSP – a leading engineering and consulting company, indicates that in-person events would have generated an average of 40 times more shows than their virtual counterparts.

WSP, a world-renowned engineering and professional services consulting firm, conducted the research in spring 2021, on behalf of 6Connex. The organization known for helping some of the world’s largest companies understand their environmental impact and structure greener solutions analyzed seven unique events organized by 6Connex from 2020. Typical activities and areas associated with virtual events versus events on site and their impact on carbon emissions in terms of transport, waste generated, energy consumption, etc., were closely examined.

Seven events were analyzed – which provided a representative sample of the different types of virtual events hosted on the 6Connex platform, such as an academic healthcare conference attended by nearly 10,000 people; a conference on women’s leadership with 8,800 participants; a commercial conference with 560 participants; and the world’s largest virtual HR conference with over 18,000 participants.
Using IP addresses and other means to determine travel requirements and typical event activities, WSP estimated the creation of carbon emissions virtually against baseline measurements for in-person events. Quantified in carbon dioxide equivalent (mtCO2e), the unit “CO2e” represents a quantity of a greenhouse gas whose atmospheric impact has been normalized to that of a unit of mass of carbon dioxide (CO2) , based on the global warming potential of the gas. Emissions were estimated in categories such as travel, hotel use, meals, waste, event space, and marketing materials. When examining the virtual events, WSP also took into account the mtCO2e associated with the use of 6Connex servers and other IT technologies.
If held on-site, these seven events would have created an estimated average of 26,370 metric tonnes more CO2 equivalents, roughly 45 times the amount spent on virtual-only events that occurred in 2020. To give One prospect, 26,370 metric tons of CO2 equals 5,813 passenger vehicles driven for a year or powering 3,219 homes for a full year.
The largest carbon emissions would have been generated by travel to and from the events, which was attended on average by 6,900 people. For the purpose of determining the duration of the trip, WSP assumed that an equivalent on-site event would have taken place in the city where the head office of the organizer of the event is located. Events reportedly took place in San Francisco, Philadelphia cream, Washington DC, and even an international presence, Greece.
Based on these figures, 6Connex has extrapolated and estimated that it has contributed more than 7,534,285 mtCO2e of avoided emissions over the past four years. This carbon sequestration is equivalent to saving 9,230,827 acres of US forests in one year. For reference, it is about 48 times the size of New York City.
